This exhibit displays 18 manuscripts from the European Criminology Collection in the Special Collections of Michigan State University Libraries. They date between 1520-1527 and document the release of prisoners from the Margraves of Brandenburg's jail in Kitzingen, Germany. As a condition of their release those detained acknowledge the legitimacy of their confinement and swear not to seek vengeance on any involved with their case or time in jail. The 18 manuscripts are listed below in chronological order and named according to the offense committed (manuscript #). Each entry contains a facsimile copy of the manuscript as well as a transcription and English translation, each with endnotes, providing information on linguistic and cultural items of interest in the manuscripts.
